The Problem With Stock Insoles
Every ski boot is sold with an insole. It is almost always inadequate. The stock footbed in even a high-end ski boot is a flat, low-density foam insert designed to fit the greatest possible range of foot shapes — which means it is specifically optimised for none of them. It provides minimal arch support, no heel cupping, and no correction for the foot's natural tendency to pronate (roll inward) or supinate (roll outward) under load.
This matters in a ski boot more than in virtually any other footwear because ski boots are rigid. Unlike a running shoe, which has some capacity to flex and accommodate foot movement, a ski boot fixes the foot's position relative to the ski. If that position is mechanically inefficient — the foot pronating inside the shell, the arch collapsing, the heel lifting unevenly — the force transmission from leg to ski is compromised, and the compensation pattern required to control the ski creates fatigue, discomfort, and reduced precision. Custom footbeds address this by creating a positive connection between the foot and the shell at every contact point.
What a Custom Footbed Actually Is
A custom ski footbed (also called an orthotic or custom insole) is a moulded support made specifically for one person's foot. The process involves capturing the foot's three-dimensional shape — particularly the arch geometry, heel positioning, and forefoot angle — and building a supportive platform that holds the foot in its neutral, mechanically efficient position inside the boot.
The capture method varies between practitioners. The traditional approach uses a bag of foam beads (impression box) into which the foot is pressed with the ankle in neutral position; this creates a positive impression from which the footbed is built. Newer approaches use scanning technology — 3D laser scanners or pressure-plate analysis — to capture foot geometry digitally before milling or printing a customised support. Some high-end fitters use cast plaster and fully bespoke moulding; this is the most accurate method but also the most time-intensive and expensive.
The finished footbed typically has a shaped EVA or polyurethane base providing structural rigidity, a top cover in Poron or leather for comfort and moisture management, and a heel cup that centres the calcaneus (heel bone) to prevent lateral migration. Better footbeds include metatarsal pads or wedges under the forefoot to address canting needs — the lateral tilt of the ski relative to the foot.
Canting and Alignment
Canting is the process of aligning the lower leg to the ski so that when the skier stands in a neutral balanced position, the ski lies flat on the snow. Most people are not anatomically neutral — the vast majority have some degree of knock-knee (valgus alignment) or bow-leg (varus alignment), which means their lower leg does not point straight down through the foot to a flat ski. Without canting correction, these skiers are permanently trying to edge the ski using body movements that compensate for the misalignment — exhausting and technically limiting.
Footbed wedges (posted footbeds) provide canting correction from below the foot: a small tilt built into the footbed under the heel and/or forefoot changes the foot's platform angle inside the boot shell, which in turn changes the angle at which the lower leg loads the ski. External canting adjustments — available on some premium boot models including Tecnica's Cuff Alignment Mechanism and Lange's Power Strap positioning — adjust the boot shell itself and can complement rather than substitute for footbed correction.
Assessing the degree and direction of canting needed requires measurement that the customer cannot perform themselves. A qualified boot fitter uses a plumb line or digital alignment tool dropped from the knee, with the skier standing on their skis, to observe the leg-to-ski relationship before and after footbed and shell adjustments. This alignment assessment should be part of any custom footbed fitting, not a separate add-on.
The Process in Practice
A thorough custom footbed fitting takes forty-five minutes to ninety minutes. It begins with an assessment of the foot off-ski: the fitter observes the standing arch height and shape, checks for significant toe deformities or structural issues, measures the foot length and width in both standing and seated positions (feet spread under weight), and identifies any areas of existing pain or pressure.
The next stage is the mould or scan, followed by footbed construction. Some shops build footbeds while you wait (forty-five minutes on a milling machine), others use a lab service with a one-to-three-day turnaround. The footbeds are then fitted to your boots — trimmed to match the boot's last width — and you stand or, ideally, ski in them before leaving. Minor adjustments are normal on first fitting; a good fitter expects to make them.
Cost ranges from approximately £70–200 in the UK, €80–220 in mainland Europe, and $100–300 in North America depending on the level of technology and expertise involved. Footbeds from specialist boot-fitting operations at resorts — the Bootdoctors in Telluride, Colorado, Base Mountain Sports at Vail, Boot Lab at Courchevel and Méribel — command premium prices that reflect genuine expertise. Department store rentals and basic ski shops rarely offer the assessment depth to make custom footbeds worth the investment; the quality of the practitioner matters as much as the material.
When to Get Footbeds
The right time to get custom footbeds is at the time of buying new boots, so the boots can be fitted around the footbed from the outset. Inserting a custom footbed into boots that were fitted without one sometimes requires shell modifications to create space — the boot may have been ground or punched to accommodate a flat foot position that the footbed now corrects, meaning the foot sits slightly higher and presses differently on the shell's upper.
For rental skiers, custom footbeds are less practical since they must fit inside different boot models across different rentals. However, some boot-fitting operations in major resorts offer footbed rentals with heat-mouldable properties that can be adjusted to fit the rental shell — a useful option for people who ski rarely but find boot comfort a persistent problem.

The claim is plausible because the mechanical improvement addresses a fundamental inefficiency at the base of the kinetic chain. Better foot support produces better edge control, reduced fatigue, and boots that can actually be buckled at the optimal tension without pain after two hours.
