Ski Racing and the World Cup

The Disciplines of Alpine Racing

Alpine ski racing is divided into five events sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS): downhill, super-G, giant slalom, slalom, and the combined. Each tests a different blend of speed, precision, and risk tolerance, and each rewards a fundamentally different type of athlete. A pure downhiller like Franz Klammer or Didier Cuche carried perhaps 30 kilograms of muscle on a frame built to absorb brutal compressions at 130 km/h; a slalom specialist like Mikaela Shiffrin or Marcel Hirscher needs explosive leg turnover and the spatial awareness to thread two-pole combinations spaced less than a metre apart.

Downhill is the oldest and most glamorous of the disciplines. Racers train over the same course across several days before competition, studying the fall line, the critical compressions, and the places where a fraction of a second can be found or lost. A top-tier downhill course drops at least 800 metres vertically; the Lauberhorn at Wengen drops around 1,000 metres and stretches to nearly 4.5 kilometres, making it the longest race on the circuit. Super-G — short for super giant slalom — was added to the World Cup programme in the mid-1980s. It shares the speed of downhill but condenses the vertical to around 500–600 metres and requires racers to navigate gates they have never trained on, relying entirely on instinct and physical skiing ability rather than course familiarity.

Giant slalom and slalom occupy the technical end of the spectrum. GS gates are set wide enough that racers can carve long arcs at genuine speed, but the margin between a clean run and a missed gate is merciless. Slalom places the gates so close together that a top racer is making 50 or more direction changes in under a minute, and the poles themselves are hinged at the base so racers can bash through them rather than ski around them — a technique that requires padded shins, forearm guards, and a specific bashing stance that looks unnatural until you understand the physics.

The World Cup Circuit

The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup has run continuously since Karl Schranz won the inaugural event at Berchtesgaden in January 1967. The season runs roughly from late October, when the first technical events are held on the Rettenbach glacier above Sölden in Austria, through to March, when the season-ending Finals rotate between venues. In between, the circuit visits around 30 venues across Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Norway, the United States, and Canada, with occasional events in Slovenia, Sweden, and further afield.

Points are awarded on a 100-80-60-50-45-40 sliding scale down to 25th place. The overall World Cup — symbolised by the large crystal globe — goes to the racer who accumulates the most points across all disciplines. Discipline globes go to the leaders in each individual event category. Winning the overall requires either domination in one discipline or genuine competence across several, which is why all-time leaders like Ingemar Stenmark and Mikaela Shiffrin have taken contrasting routes to their records.

The women's circuit and men's circuit run in parallel, sometimes sharing venues on consecutive days. Historically the women's circuit received less media coverage and smaller prize money, but both have grown in profile substantially since the 2000s, partly driven by the dominance of figures like Lindsey Vonn in speed events and Shiffrin's unprecedented versatility.

The Classic Races

Certain venues have attained the status of classics through a combination of course difficulty, history, and atmosphere. Kitzbühel's Hahnenkamm weekend in late January is the most famous event on the circuit, drawing crowds of 50,000 or more to the Austrian Tyrol. The Streif — the downhill course — drops 860 metres vertically and features sections with a pitch exceeding 85 percent, including the notorious Mausefalle and Steilhang. Winning the Streif carries a weight that even multiple World Cup victories elsewhere cannot replicate.

The Lauberhorn at Wengen, mentioned above for its length, is run in front of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau — a backdrop that makes every television broadcast look like a landscape painting. The Canadian speed races at Lake Louise, held on the slopes above Banff in Alberta, have produced some of the fastest times in the discipline because the course is wide, well-prepared, and at elevation. Val Gardena's Saslong in Italy is another speed classic, with a long schuss across the plateau above the Dolomites before the final technical sections.

On the technical side, the Slalom on the Planai in Schladming is held under floodlights with a crowd that generates a noise level that has been officially measured above 100 decibels. The Kandahar events at Garmisch-Partenkirchen have roots going back to the 1930s, when Arnold Lunn first formalised the rules of slalom racing in the British Alpine Ski Club's Kandahar club.

Olympic and World Championship Racing

The World Cup points race is a season-long marathon; the Alpine Ski World Championships and Winter Olympics are the sprint championships that define legacies. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships are held in odd-numbered years between Olympic Games, rotating among major ski nations. Recent editions have been held in St. Moritz, Åre, Cortina d'Ampezzo, and Courchevel-Méribel.

Olympic alpine ski racing began at the 1936 Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, when a combined event was held for both men and women. The programme has expanded steadily since, and the 2022 Beijing Games — held at the Yanqing National Alpine Ski Center and at a transferred venue on Zhangjiakou's slopes — saw team event competition alongside the full individual programme. The 2026 Milan-Cortina Games will return racing to the Dolomites, where conditions and altitude should favour classic alpine racing.

Gold medals at major championships often carry more narrative weight in Europe, where skiing is a national sport in Austria, Switzerland, Norway, and France, than the World Cup title does. Austrian Racing, in particular, operates under extraordinary public expectation — the Österreichischer Skiverband fields large, professional squads and skiing success is treated as national business.

Training and the Racing Career

Modern alpine racers begin on racing gates in childhood and move through club, regional, and national squad structures. The Austrian and Swiss ski federations run academies that combine secondary schooling with full-time skiing. By the time a racer reaches the FIS Europa Cup — the second-tier circuit — they will typically have been training full-time for several years.

A successful World Cup career might span 15 years for a technical specialist, somewhat shorter for speed specialists whose bodies absorb more punishment. Injuries are endemic: ACL tears are so common in the sport that many top racers have had bilateral reconstruction at least once. Lindsey Vonn, who won 82 World Cup races across her career, described undergoing surgery more than 20 times. The sport demands a capacity to rehabilitate and return that is as demanding as the physical training itself.

From a spectator's perspective, the combination of speed, risk, and precision that defines alpine ski racing is unlike anything else in winter sport.
