The Idea Behind the Split

For most of snowboarding's history, accessing untracked backcountry powder required either a helicopter, a snowcat or carrying the board and hiking on foot — a deeply inefficient process that left most backcountry terrain the exclusive province of ski tourers. The splitboard changed that calculation. By converting a snowboard into two narrow ski-like halves joined by a skin track system, it allows a snowboarder to ascend any terrain a ski tourer can climb, then reassemble the board at the top and ride down as normal.

The concept was prototyped in the early 1990s by Voilé, a small Utah-based company, and remained a niche curiosity for over a decade before avalanche safety awareness, high-quality manufacturing and a growing backcountry culture turned it into mainstream snowboard equipment. Today every major snowboard brand — Burton, Jones, Lib Tech, Arbor — produces a dedicated splitboard line, and the global splitboard market has grown consistently as snowboarders look beyond groomed resorts.

How the System Works

A splitboard is a snowboard that has been cut longitudinally down the centre, producing two half-boards. The bindings are a dedicated splitboard-specific type — brands including Spark R&D, Union Expedition and Karakoram make the most widely used — that pivot at the toe to allow a natural walking gait during ascent, then lock down into a rigid riding position for descent.

The climbing surface is provided by climbing skins: strips of mohair or synthetic fabric with a directional nap that grips snow during upward movement and glides during flat traversing. Skins attach to the base of each half-board via adhesive and a tip-and-tail clip system. The same skins used for ski touring work on splitboards, as long as they are cut to the correct width.

Conversion between touring mode (two skis with climbing skins and pivoting bindings) and riding mode (reassembled board with locked bindings) takes approximately two minutes with practice, and less than five for a competent user in gloves. The interface clips along the board's centreline use a lever-and-channel system — Karakoram's interface is the gold standard for precision; Voilé's lighter option is preferred for weight-saving. The reassembled board has a shallow longitudinal seam visible down its centre but rides identically to a standard snowboard for all practical purposes.

Climbing Technique and Efficiency

The climbing motion on a splitboard is a short, sliding shuffle rather than a full ski-touring kick-and-glide. The relatively wide platform and relatively short length of a splitboard half (narrower than a typical touring ski) limits the efficiency of the glide phase, which means splitboard ascents are somewhat slower per vertical metre than skiing equivalents. Experienced ski tourers are typically 15 to 20 percent faster ascending than splitboarders at the same fitness level.

Boot stiffness compounds this. Splitboard boots are softer and more foot-flexing than alpine touring ski boots, which makes them more comfortable during long ascents but less efficient at transferring power to the climbing skin during steep terrain. This is a hardware compromise inherent to the system — the same boot softness that makes split riding feel natural at the bottom of a powder face makes sustained steep climbing more fatiguing.

Poles are used exactly as in ski touring: planted alternately for rhythm and balance, and — on steep terrain — sometimes used together in a double-pole push that substantially assists ascent. Splitboarders use the same collapsible adjustable poles as ski tourers, extending them for ascent and shortening them for the descent ride.

Route Planning and Terrain Selection

Splitboarding is backcountry travel. Every rule that applies to ski touring in avalanche terrain applies equally: carry transceiver, probe and shovel; check the avalanche bulletin before departure; travel with a partner; identify safe rest zones and communicate before crossing exposed slopes. This is not boilerplate — avalanche accidents involving splitboarders occur every season, and the majority involve parties who knew the equipment but underestimated the terrain.

Splitboards excel in moderate to steep terrain where the descent reward — usually an untracked powder face — justifies the climbing investment. The best splitboard routes are those where the descent is directly below the ascent: climbing a ridge and dropping the other face means the reassembly point is at the top of the run, rather than requiring an additional traverse on foot.

Glacier travel requires crampons, which attach to splitboard boots via standard step-in systems, and ice axe carrying capacity in the pack. The Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt is increasingly popular with splitboarders using exactly this approach: ascending in touring mode, riding descent powder where available, crampon-walking on exposed glacial sections.

Splitboard-Specific Resorts and Zones

Major mountain resorts worldwide have responded to growing splitboard demand by designating uptrack routes — usually the sides of designated pistes — where skinning is permitted during operating hours. Whistler Blackcomb has formalised uptrack access along defined corridors. Resorts in Japan's Hokkaido region, where backcountry snowfall is extraordinary, often permit skinning access to terrain above and beyond lift-served area boundaries under formal uptrack agreements.

The most productive splitboard terrain globally tends to cluster around resorts with significant off-piste potential and well-developed guide services: Chamonix (France), Haines (Alaska), Revelstoke (British Columbia), La Grave (France) and the Selkirk and Monashee ranges of British Columbia accessed from Rogers Pass. These locations combine reliable deep snow, complex terrain, and established guide networks familiar with leading splitboard-specific tours.

Weight and Pack Considerations

A splitboard weighs more than a standard snowboard of equivalent dimensions because of the additional hardware — interface clips, splitboard-compatible binding system, reinforced centreline. A typical setup adds 300–700 g over a comparable non-split board. On a full-day tour with 800–1200 m of vertical ascent, this extra weight is noticeable but not prohibitive.

The pack required for a day's splitboarding is identical to ski touring: 25 to 35 litres, carrying the avalanche safety gear, spare layers, food and water, a headlamp and navigation tools. Snowboard boots, being softer and more packable than ski touring boots, are an unexpected advantage here — they can be carried more comfortably if a crampon section requires walking in microspikes instead.

Getting Started: Instruction and First Tours

Anyone with solid off-piste snowboarding experience and basic backcountry awareness is technically ready to try splitboarding. The most efficient introduction is a guided half-day or full-day introductory tour with an IFMGA or equivalent guide, which provides terrain-appropriate instruction in skinning technique, transition procedure, touring route selection and avalanche travel protocol simultaneously.

Avalanche safety training — at minimum a recreational avalanche course such as the AIARE Level 1 (North America), Avalanche Skills Training (Canada) or SLF beginner course (Switzerland) — should precede or accompany the first splits trips, not follow them.
