The History of Skiing
The Oldest Evidence
The oldest known ski fragment was discovered in Vis, Russia, in a peat bog, and dates to roughly 6000 BCE. Similar finds have emerged from Norway, Sweden and China. These are not recreational objects. They are tools — wide, flat boards of pine or birch designed to distribute weight over soft snow so that hunters and travellers could move across winter landscapes that would otherwise be impassable. Rock carvings in Nordland, Norway, depicting what appear to be skiers date to around 4000 BCE. The image of a human figure on two long runners is ancient enough to suggest that sliding on snow is among the most persistent adaptations humanity has made to cold-climate terrain.
For most of the millennia between those first planks and the nineteenth century, skis were regional tools with no standardised design. Norwegian skis tended to be long and narrow. The Sami people of northern Scandinavia used different designs under each foot — a longer gliding ski and a shorter, fur-bottomed kick ski for propulsion. Siberian and Chinese skiing traditions developed independently. What united these practices was utility rather than pleasure.
Military Skiing and the First Competitions
Norway produced the first documented military use of skis on any scale. In 1767, the Norwegian military held what are sometimes described as the first organised ski competitions — races and manoeuvres testing soldiers' ability to ski down hills, shoot accurately while moving on skis, and navigate wooded terrain. These exercises acknowledged what commanders already knew: in Norwegian winters, infantry on foot were tactically inferior to men on skis.
The first civilian ski competitions followed. The Huseby races outside Christiania (now Oslo) began in the 1860s and drew tens of thousands of spectators. It was in this context that Sondre Norheim from Telemark emerged as the dominant figure. Norheim introduced a binding using twisted birch root that held the heel loosely to the ski — an enormous advance over simple toe straps — and developed a refined sidecut on his skis that made turning possible. He won the Christiania races in 1868 and demonstrated both the telemark turn and the Christiania (parallel stop-turn) that would bear the city's name. The sport had, for the first time, technique.
The Alpine Transformation
Norwegian emigrants and adventurers spread skiing across Europe in the late nineteenth century. A Norwegian named Fridtjof Nansen completed the first crossing of Greenland on skis in 1888, publishing an account that became an international sensation and introduced skiing to a wide European audience as something more than a Scandinavian curiosity. Ski clubs formed across the Alps — in Glarus, Switzerland in 1893, in Kitzbühel in 1902, in Chamonix in 1896.
The Alpine mountains presented conditions utterly different from the rolling Norwegian terrain on which the telemark turn had been developed. Steeper gradients and harder snow demanded different techniques and different equipment. The Austrian Mathias Zdarsky developed a shorter, single-pole technique at Lilienfeld in the 1890s specifically adapted to steep Alpine slopes. His methods conflicted sharply with the Norwegian tradition, and the resulting argument — essentially about whether Norwegian or Austrian skiing methods should dominate — was the first major technical controversy in the sport's history.
Hannes Schneider, working at St. Anton am Arlberg in the early twentieth century, synthesised various influences into what became known as the Arlberg technique: a systematic progression from snowplough to stem christie to parallel turns, taught through ski school instruction. Schneider opened one of the world's first ski schools in 1921. The Arlberg technique became the foundation of modern ski instruction and was exported worldwide — by Schneider himself after he fled Austria following the Anschluss, eventually settling in North Conway, New Hampshire, and by his students across Europe and the Americas.
The Lift Era
The first mechanised ski lift appeared at Davos, Switzerland, in 1908 — a rudimentary rope tow driven by an engine. Sun Valley, Idaho, opened the world's first chairlift in 1936, designed by Union Pacific engineers who modelled it on banana-loading equipment. The chairlift fundamentally transformed skiing economics and demographics. Where skiers had previously needed to climb everything they descended, lifts decoupled ascent from effort. A skier could now make ten runs in the time it previously took to make one.
The post-war period saw explosive resort development across the Alps and North America. Megève, Courchevel and Val d'Isère developed in France. Verbier and Davos expanded in Switzerland. Colorado's Vail opened in 1962, designed from scratch as a resort village. Japanese ski areas expanded rapidly through the 1970s and 1980s. By 1980 there were an estimated 35 million skiers worldwide. The ski industry had become a major economic sector, and the architecture of the mountain resort — base lodge, lift network, groomed piste system, ski school, rental shop — had standardised globally.
Racing and the World Cup
Competitive alpine skiing formalised through the twentieth century alongside resort development. The first Alpine Ski World Championships were held at Mürren, Switzerland, in 1931. The downhill, slalom and combined events tested different aspects of alpine technique. The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup — a season-long points competition across multiple venues — began in 1967 on the initiative of journalists Serge Lang and Honoré Bonnet and racer Bob Beattie. The first overall winner was Jean-Claude Killy of France, who also won all three alpine events at the 1968 Grenoble Olympics.
The World Cup circuit created the sport's first sustained international celebrities. Killy, Ingemar Stenmark, Franz Klammer, Pirmin Zurbriggen and later Hermann Maier and Bode Miller became figures whose names crossed beyond sport into general culture. Klammer's near-out-of-control downhill run at the 1976 Innsbruck Olympics — watched by an Austrian national television audience reported at five million — remains one of the most replayed moments in winter sports broadcasting.
Equipment Revolution
The equipment used by recreational skiers changed more between 1980 and 2010 than in all the previous decades combined. The shift from straight skis to shaped ('carving') skis in the mid-1990s — pioneered by Elan and then adopted universally — made parallel turns accessible to intermediate skiers who had spent years struggling with the stem christie. A shaped ski with a pronounced hourglass sidecut carves arcs automatically when tilted on edge; the skier's job is to initiate the tilt and control pressure rather than rotate the ski manually. Ski school instruction had to be rewritten.
Plastic ski boots, which replaced leather during the 1970s, gave way to increasingly sophisticated systems integrating adjustable flex, customisable liners and precise buckle closure. Helmet use became near-universal in the 2000s following the high-profile deaths of Sonny Bono in 1998 and Michael Kennedy in 1997, both in slope collisions.
Skiing Today
Global ski participation has fluctuated since the highs of the 1980s and 1990s, with climate change presenting the most serious structural challenge the industry has ever faced. Lower-elevation resorts in the Alps and in states like Vermont have experienced significant reductions in natural snow cover. The industry response has been heavy investment in snowmaking infrastructure and an upward shift of resort development toward higher elevations. The interplay between skiing and climate change is now a central topic in resort planning, and initiatives to reduce lift-system energy consumption and shift to renewable power are widespread.
The sport's geography has also diversified. Japan — particularly Hokkaido, with its extraordinary dry powder — has become a first-rank destination for international skiers. China's hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics at Zhangjiakou and Yanqing accelerated domestic ski development. Resorts in Chile, Argentina and New Zealand serve a growing Southern Hemisphere season. What began as a survival strategy — a way to move across a hostile landscape — became in turn a competitive tradition, a leisure industry, a performance sport, and a culture.
